Challenging the traditional production chain, from rearing animals to consumption, Hanan Alkouh uses dulse seaweed — renowned for its pork like taste — to replicate the familiar taste and texture of pork. To reflect the system of the meat production industry, Hanan uses a butcher’s shop as a platform to open up a dialogue designed to rethink consumer actions, the marketplace and cultural meanings. Hanan worked with a professional butcher to record the slaughtering process, and used the film to elaborate on the semiotic theoretical basis of her work.
