This festive season, SK-II reimagined the legendary heritage of Pitera. It was the first time the virtual influencer Imma was brought to life to interact with other SKII influencers Ayase, Behati and DJT, in order to spread the artwork of their respective festive bottles throughout the streets of Tokyo.

SK-II’s first collaboration with the iconic Japanese fashion house Maison Kitsuné. This campaign featured a larger-than-life version of Chinese actress Qiu Tian, alongside the Kitsuné fox, on a journey through a whimsical day and night world, brought to life with two 10m² miniature sets.

The cool thing about this project was putting together the different elements like the use of miniature sets along with CG animation and cel-animation techniques. The miniature set played a crucial role in establishing the aesthetic of the project, serving as the foundation for the overall look. All additional elements added to the shots were designed to complement the miniature design, ensuring a cohesive and enjoyable world design rather than prioritizing realism.

All cameras were 3D-tracked to enable the addition of CG elements like water and extensions to create immersive scenes. For the horizon elements, matte painting, and the incorporation of on-set photography.

SKII Maison Kitsune

This film follows a sand boarder in the Arabian Desert. She goes over a jump and flies into a 3D version of the Ariel logo. This logo was tricky, as it is designed in 2D and is an intentionally impossible shape. To create this in 3D we needed to make our own optical illusion that only works from a certain angle. 

After the demo sequence, she bursts out of the logo and continues down the dunes, but now leaving a trail of blooming lavendar. Sand is difficult to track, so a lot of the camera tracks were done by hand. The flower blooming system was designed in Houdini with lots of controls for the pattern and the speed that they spread. The speed had to be quick to match the fast paced edit.

Riot Games 'Undefeated' Music Video

The audience is taken through the Suntory BOSS Coffee “flash brew” process. We see the striking glass ‘pour over’ apparatus, the hot steam rising, and the rich coffee bubbling before its chilled over chunks of ice and is poured into the Suntory BOSS Coffee can.

The Catch?
Every element in this spot was created in CG, the only exception was the talent.

We put a lot of love into our CG liquid simulations, our beautiful lighting and the textures of the coffee, the paper, glass and everything else, so that even though it was all completely computer generated, it felt realistic and authentic.
Using Houdini, we were able to get our water flow, steam, bubbles, foam, ice, and coffee grains, all looking super realistic.
